A color comic experiment!

This is for my Graphic Novel Appreciation class,
we were to find a place that we have visited and have a photo or sketch documentation to, and appropriate that place into a scene in one of our stories' world.

We are to make a fully-realized three-panel style example, and while we don't need to push any sort of plot or narrative, at least one panel needs text. We are to show a taste of what our finished comic will look like in terms of style and execution.

This is my first time trying out this digital painting thing on Photoshop and was happy with how it turned out! It was difficult and time consuming, but fun enough that I would love to do more of it!

The story and the characters are all my original work. Please do not copy, even though basically nothing about it is explained or told here.

For the place, I used a photo of a Deaf/Blind School I used to intern in, for reference. Maybe I'll post the original photo reference later.

Best Coolest-Younhee

This is an assignment for "Graphic Novel Appreciation" class I am taking at BYU
(Readers: Younhee, you take the most random classes; Me: Yes I do,,)
Here we go:

*****

Answer the questionnaire I handed out in class, and post a link to your answers with the title "Best Coolest + (your name)". Please answer these questions spontaneously, without doing any outside research or review. I'd just like to get a better sense of who you are. There are no wrong answers; most of these questions pertain to your tastes and interests. If you don't have an answer to something or a firm opinion on this or that, just say "I don't know". (That said, there is also nothing wrong with letting questions that you don’t have an answer to spark interest enough to go on a date night with wikipedia – or something to that effect) Thanks:

1. Outside of school and your comics, have you written any fiction or non-fiction? Do you like to read prose fiction or non-fiction?

· Yes, I've written a short story or two for fun that are fiction, and I also wrote a version or two of my life story, so I guess that counts as non-fiction?

· Yes, I usually enjoy reading prose fiction more, but I enjoy reading biography type of non-fictions as well--people are interesting :)

2. Would you say you have a good awareness of the history of American comics?

· Nope, not at all I’d say

3. Off the top of your head, could you name 5 artists who worked in comics before 1980? Do you have a favorite?

· No

4. Could you name 5 artists who work or worked in newspaper comics?

· I can not

5. Could you name any contemporary cartoonists from Europe? Do you have a favorite?

· No

6. Could you name any contemporary manga artists from Japan? Do you have a favorite?

· CLAMP, Takeshi Obata, Yuu Watase

· I’d say I like CLAMP best out of the three.

7. Do you read European comics?

· I do not

8. Do you read any manga?

· I used to, not as of late

9. Do you regularly draw in a sketchbook or write in a journal?

· I regularly draw in a sketchbook, and I write my thoughts down from time to time but not exclusively in a set journal

10. Would you say you have a good working ability to drawing with brush and ink? If so, how long have you used a brush? What types?

· I don’t know, I haven’t tried yet, other than a calligraphy brush and ink to do calligraphy from about 10 years ago in Korea.

11. Which magazines or websites do you regularly read in order to get comics news?

· I used to go to Onemanga.com until about 2 years ago when I stopped reading, that was when the only series that I was reading at the time ended.

12. Which magazines or websites do you regularly read in order to get news of current events?

· I don’t read magazines or websites in order to get news of current events, I usually find out the really big events from other sources though (such as people in my life, online networking, checking email, etc.)

13. Do you go to comic book conventions or festivals? If so--which ones?

· No

14. Have you ever sat through a portfolio review with a professional editor? If so, could you briefly sum up their message for you?

· No, that sounds very helpful and awesome though, what an opportunity!

15. Have you ever had your work published? If so, where?

· No, maybe someday :)

16. How long have you been drawing?

· Ever since before I learned to talk, according to my mom

17. Do you like to go to museums? Do you have any favorite "fine" artists, either living or dead? Film directors?

· Yes I do!

· Um,,,DaVinci was cool

· I like almost all of Hayao Miyazaki's films, I've enjoyed many of M. Night Shyamalan's as well, I don't know a lot of directors though,,

18. Would you think it could be useful or beneficial to watch a film or films as a group and discuss it afterwards as it may relate to comics? Do you have a recommendation for such a film?

· That sounds like a good idea.

· Hmm,,,The Incredibles, Sky High (though I've never seen it myself), Atlantis, Bolt (at least the 1st Sequence)

19. What ethnographic background do you have and how confident are you in acting as an expert of resource of that background?

· Umm,,Culture wise I guess I am pretty confident with Korean background, Japan, not so confident, and maybe some what confident with the American Deaf culture

· Graphic Novel/Entertainment wise, little confident in all three

The Artist

I drew this picture for my beloved roommate Jayne's birthday,
and then in her Intro to Theater class, she wrote an amazing play where she decided to use this as the "painting" the Artist in the play paints! So we colored the picture with dry pastel together! It was a blast!! :D

It was a beautiful play, I hoped everyone could have seen it!!

All Grown Up and Savin' God's Children, , ,

I got my mission call!!!!! (On Wednesday)

But I had to wait until Friday for my family to arrive so we can open it together!

So here's the news:

I have been called as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints!!

My initial assignment is to labor in the China Hong Kong Mission!!!

I will be preaching the gospel in the Cantonese language!!!!!!!!

And then my beloved roommate Jayne made the following comment:

"Sniff, My little Baby's all grown up, and... and, savin' China."

A reference to the amazing Disney Animated movie Mulan!

So I just had to make this adjustment to the picture of Mulan I found :] :]

We had a wonderful time watching Mulan that night to celebrate ^^

Blocks to Heaven

This is a comic idea,

I have been thinking about this a lot,
and in my Mission Prep class taught by Brother Bott (one of THE best Teacher in BYU!! Highly recommended for all BYU students!!)
has brought up a point on his "Monster of Depression" lecture that
"Things God placed in your path to help you get back to Him becomes stumbling blocks when you become depressed".
And that statement he made completed this idea--
that God places stepping blocks to help us draw closer to Him,
but sometimes our lack of faith turns them into stumbling blocks and we despair because they are too big to overcome.
But God has sent many helping hands to help us step over those big blocks in life,
take those hands, especially our Lord Jesus Christ's.

When trial hits, weak faith can be discovered which can be strengthened by turning to God for help,
once the trial is over, faith is stronger than before.
Trial brings us an opportunity to draw closer to God,
Therefore, trials are blessings in disguise.

I did a quick sketch so that I wouldn't forget about the idea (since I don't have time to work on it right now due to preparing for the BYU Animation program Application Portfolio, preparing for my mission, and other things in my life), and I have finally got around to a scanner to post it!

Hope this post has served as more than just a record of my idea, because I think having such attitude can take us really far :)

No Man Has Greater Love, , ,

, , ,than Jesus Christ,

He has lived his whole life for us,

He has suffered for us, He has died for us,
and He continues to be there for us and remember us
by the engravings on His hands,,,

I enjoy sketching Him, and especially His intimate relationship with us

His love and peace is for everyone,
for every living being that has lived, does live, and will live on Earth
He is our Advocate to our Heavenly Father and we pray in His holy name
He is Love, He is the greatest Love and Peace,
And He yearns for us to get to know Him and follow Him, because He has already overcome the world, and know how to lead us to do the same, He is actively waiting for each and one of us.

I love Him with all my heart, mind, and soul!

love

Love, , ,
is one of my biggest passions. It may sound little weird but it is.

Love is everything

The two greatest commandments of God are to love (Matthew 22:36-39),
And without love we are nothing (1 Corinthians 13),
With love we will never fail (Moroni 7:44-48),
We need more love in this world. Love is everything. Christ is the greatest love, also known as Charity the pure love of Christ, love made everything possible.
Jesus Christ loved each and one of us. He loved us so much that He lived His whole earthly life sinless and full of service, His whole life was basically dedicated to us. He is the best example that proves Charity is the most powerful above all. He endured through the unimaginable pains of the Atonement and never gave up because He loved us so much and knew that He would be able to bring us to His happiness if He did it. Like depicted in the story of the Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11-32), it does not matter if one person lived his whole life doing good and the other person just caught up doing good in the end, all that really matters is that we all end up achieving the goal of becoming like God and being able to live together in the eternal happiness. We were all a part of a big family of our Heavenly Father. If we truly understood that love, we would not want any one of our family member to be missing at the end. No one can replace that spot. And our Savior Jesus Christ, our eldest brother loved His family very much. He did absolutely everything to make it possible that each and every member of the family will be able to return, having grown to be like their Heavenly Parents, if they choose. The Savior did everything, and still does and always will do everything for us. He is always beside us waiting for us to finally turn to Him and to desire to love as He did. Because He knows that nothing provides more happiness, more fulfillment, more
strength than to have Charity for everyone. God is Love. Love is worth the heartbreaking sorrow that is experienced when those we love refuses Love. Savior came here to Love, and people refused Him when all He wanted was for them to love each other and experience that joy through Him. He had so much love for us and He literally died of a broken heart on the cross.

We are still commanded to love today. It is really hard to keep that love in today's world, in this perilous times (2Timothy 3), when "love of many shall wax cold" (Matthew 24:12) but if we endure and not be overcome by the many in this world, we will be saved and taken care of (JS-Matthew 1:30). Though not as Christ, we will go through heartbreaks in this world when all we did was to love and to have someone else's welfare in mind. But we are not alone, and we can get through. Because Christ has already went through them all. He can strengthen us and help us as we strive to live in this world as He did, loving people because you love them even when the love is not received, serving others, and above all doing God's will on earth.

There are many with their hearts full of love that wants their voices to be heard. They desire more people to have love, to come to our Savior for healing and strength to continue to love. If you have that heart full of love, you will experience heartbreaks, but you are not alone, you don't have to be. If you don't have that heart full of love, you can ask God to bless you with the gift of charity, to be able to love people, to have your empty heart be filled with love. There's always hope, because of our Lord Jesus Christ. He made everything possible for us if we have the desire.

Light in Your Eyes by Flyleaf

Below is an interesting video depicting the love this woman has to share. She has a big heart but people are either weirded out by it or the abnormality of it drives people away. The big heart becomes a burden as she has no one to share it with and has to carry it alone, and she becomes discouraged and the heart begins to shrink. But all the heart needs to recover is one person's kindness and support and it gives her another chance to love with all she has. When we know Christ, our love can constantly be renewed. And someday we will find a partner that can keep the heart growing and will be able to carry it together with Christ.

And maybe by our example to keep carrying the big heart around in this world, and by testifying of love, having a big heart might not be an abnormal thing anymore.

So I challenge all who reads this to 'testify to love', because 'love is here', 'love is now'.

Edit: I didn't realize today was also Valentines Day! What a fitting post :D, Happy Valentines Day everyone! Keep the Love in the air! Charity for everyone!!

Desire = Call

This is such a great video about our call to share the gospel as long as we have that desire!
We can do this by utilizing all the resources around us, especially through the internet if you have the access!

Do you have the desire? If not, you can pray to have it! Moroni 7:48

Flyleaf

Ok, I just have to share my favorite band or "celebrity" with all of you that are interested.

I love Flyleaf so much.
Their lead singer is Lacey Mosley and her testimonies and speeches are so powerful! She isn't a member of The Church, but her intimate relationship with her Savior is so apparent in her words and songs, and that is what is first and foremost important right? Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. She has totally dedicated herself to God and I just love her so much.

This is her story of conversion, how she evolved from being an atheist to believing:

This video tells of a story of how her song has influenced the listeners:

Here is her live concert I found where she gives very touching speech bearing her testimony of the love of God:

She is one person that found God and His Greatest Love. And she is influencing so many people through the gift she has been given. She is so inspiring. And I love her songs because they express what I feel too.

Here are some parts of lyrics from her songs:

I know what perfection is like And I cannot stand before its might, And I'm so far from what you think that I must be, I just drown myself in mercy,, I'll show you what He did, But I won't take the credit, It's not mine anyway I just held the pen that day,,And I don't deserve this, It wasn't me, I can't take glory for something that I can't be,,, And all the art that I supposedly create Is simply a faded reflection of something He's already made,,"

Fully alive, More than most Ready to smile and love life, Fully alive and she knows How to believe in futures, How to believe in Jesus

Perfect in weakness, I'm only perfect in just your strength alone, You save me
I'm only running in just your strength alone

My scars are yours today, I love you and I understand That you stood where I stand

My hands are searching for you, My arms are outstretched towards you, I feel you on my fingertips,,
This fire rising through my being, I'm alive, I'm alive, I can feel you all around me Thickening the air I'm breathing Holding on to what I'm feeling Savoring this heart that's healing, My hands float up above me And you whisper you love me And I begin to fade Into our secret place, And so I cry The light is white And I see you,, Take my hand I give it to you Now you own me All I am, You said you would never leave me, I believe you I believe, I can feel you all around me, Holding on to what I'm feeling, Savoring this heart that's healed

You are the truth (you are the truth) Saving my life, The warmth of your embrace Melts my frostbitten spirit, You speak the truth and I hear it The words are I love you, you are the truth Outscreaming these lies, My hands are open And you are filling them, Hands in the air And I worship You!

Sometimes I'm a selfish fake, You're always a true friend, I wanna be there for you,,, Swirling shades of blue Slow dancing in your eyes, The sun kisses the earth And I hush my urge to cry, 'cause I hear the whispered words Within you're masterpiece beautiful, Speak the unspeakable phrase, I love you too, Love runs deeper than my bones, And you, you're beautiful

Tiny heart, Stuck inside yourself, When will you open up for me, I love you so I wanna meet you again,, Your lips touched every hand but mine, If you choose me, I’m waiting for you, Always waiting,
Tiny heart, You're not by yourself, When will you recognize the beat Of my own heart Grieving in your hand, You crush me when you run that way

Unified diversity, Functioning as one body, Every part encouraged by the other, No one independent of another, You're irreplaceable, indispensable, You're incredible, incredible,,Beautiful bride, Body of Christ, One flesh abiding, Strong and unifying, Fighting ends in forgiveness, Unite and fight all division
Beautiful bride,,Strengthen your arms now Train your fingers for battle, Urgency's here now Train your fingers for battle, Fighting this violence With your feet wrapped in peace, Sad tears and silence Now screams of joy, Victory!
We're not gonna fall and forget How far You went to pick us up,, If one part's hurt the whole body's sick, If one part mourns we all mourn with Him, Rejoice, we'll sing with you, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah

By their fruits ye shall know them,
FLYLEAF ROCKS :D

Sharing the Gospel 2011

In BYU I am enrolled in:
Honors 295R Section 1 Proselyting 2.0
Sharing the Gospel Using the Internet
!

I'm VERY excited for this class!!

I am learning so much and I have only attended the class once! xD
Well, but I have been doing the assignments for that class today and the assignments makes me so happy and thrilled!

Well, at least about the articles that I had to read for the class I did, the video assignments not so much, they rather got me to be a bit nervous and it was quite mind boggling to see the exponential growth of the modern technology. I hope I can catch up alright! But time is SO limited, so it is a good thing that I'm learning about them for a class haha :P

I have previously stayed away from all the networking, internet life as much as I could, because I was worried about the time it would take away from the real world and mostly because of all the "pirates" on the internet trying to steal personal informations and stuff, But from watching those videos and reading the talks, I realize that those technologies are only going to get more efficient and very useful if you know how to use them. In other words, they are opportunities, tools, and blessings to further the work of the Lord. Because there are oppositions to all things, I cannot stay ignorant of the opportunities I am surrounded with and let the oppositions to grow stronger. There are dangers and bads in everything thanks to Satan. And same goes with internet. As Elder Ballard has said, I need to participate in those conversations and spread the good news, do my best to fill the internet with the things of the Lord, I need to outweigh the evil with the good, yess,,

I can do this!
Especially when the Lord is with me! :D :D

Anyways, this is SO perfect! Learning about how to more effectively share the gospel by utilizing the internet as well!! I'm excited to learn all that this class has to offer!!!

Using my Gift

Even though it was my dream to go on a mission, it doesn't mean that once my mission is over my dream life will also be over.

Because there are so many ways to serve our Heavenly Father :)

He has given me some gifts in this life, and I will serve Him by improving and using those gifts.

Lately, since the last semester, or maybe long before that, I have had many story ideas in my head that would just pop out, about how to share what I know. And as I grasp on those ideas inspirations would just flow in endlessly.
So I chose one idea and began working on it during my spare time since half way into last semester.

I have really been able to make progress during the Christmas Break, and it makes me so happy whenever I find the time to work on it.

This personal project is an animated story of a conversion, and here are concept sketches if you're interested :)

There are other ideas that I am developing in my head that I am not currently working on, such as: an animated cut out figurines about the plan of salvation narrated by children, an animated life of trees (trees are SO inspiring!!), fire vs. ice, etc.; and they all have gospel messages I want to share.

I am very excited for this dream life to continue!! I am SO loving it right now!!

Here it begins,,,!!

It's the year 2011!!!
I'm very excited about this year!
And I began it the perfect way I could possibly think of!

I started filling out my mission paper on 1/1/11!!!

I'm going on a mission! I'm going on a mission! I'm finally going on a mission!!!
Dream come true!!!

So, starting the year 2011, I will also start on my dream life, being an instrument of the Lord to bring His children to Him!
I have been preparing for this year all along, and will make the most of it now that it's here!

"I believe in Christ! So Come What May!!" Nothing can stop me as long as I have Christ as my foundation!
